Streamlining UX Across a Big Pharma Operations Ecosystem

I led the design effort for an ecosystem of operational applications supporting the full lifecycle of activities for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies. This ecosystem included seven interconnected applications focused on production, supply chain, and quality monitoring.

target audience

The primary users were employees working across manufacturing sites who relied on these applications to support the company’s daily operations.

my role & team

For the first six months on the project, I worked as the sole UX/UI designer, taking ownership of the design direction until an internal Design Lead was hired.

As a key designer, I supported 7 cross-functional product teams, which included:

  • Product Owner, Business Analyst, Dev Lead

  • FE and BE Developers, API Engineers

  • QA Specialists

  • System Architect

process

  • The product team operated in two-week sprints and engaged in Scrum activities, including refinement, planning and retrospective sessions.

  • In addition to addressing product-specific requests, I actively advocated for UX improvements across the ecosystem.

  • Facilitated client workshops and discovery sessions with Product Owners and end-users, ensuring a deep understanding of their needs.

challenges

  • Ensuring a consistent user experience across different applications without a common design library.

  • Supporting seven parallel development streams, each with unique requirements and priorities.

  • Designing with third-party libraries such as AG Grid, Highcharts, and Bootstrap to balance feasibility and design quality.

results

  • Earned three client recognitions for extraordinary contributions and effective solutions in business operations.

  • Facilitated 10+ client workshops to understand user needs and refine product requirements.

  • Initiated and led the creation of a common components library, streamlining design consistency across applications.

  • Developed fluency in AG Grid, Highcharts, and Bootstrap, allowing me to propose feasible and scalable design solutions.

Leveraging Shared Components for a New Application

During my time on the project, I had the opportunity to improve existing products and design new solutions from scratch. One such solution was an integrated system for Quality Operations specialists aimed to optimise their daily workflows.

task

Understand business requirements and provide designs that align with the workflows, pain points, and aspirations of the Quality Operations teams.

discovery workshop

I organised and facilitated a discovery workshop to gather insights from different Quality teams. This process helped uncover key pain points, identify user needs, and clarify operational workflows. The workshop resulted in a clear problem statement and prioritised user requirements.

design definition

Working closely with the Product Owner and Business Analyst, we identified the essential features to address in the design. However, the decision between using a BI platform or developing a custom Angular application was still under discussion.

leveraging shared components

Client's BI tools had limitations that couldn't meet all requirements. I noticed that many of the needed features aligned with a shared component library I had previously helped develop. I proposed reusing these components to build a standalone Angular application. This approach enabled all the advantages of a custom application while ensuring design consistency and simplifying development.

prototyping

Considering the above, I created a prototype using shared components to ease the development process and minimise the learning curve for the team.

result

Design handoff. Although I transitioned off the project before the implementation phase, I provided a complete handoff package. This included high-fidelity prototypes, detailed documentation, and links to shared components.

Efficient development. Reusing shared components allowed us to leverage the flexibility of the custom Angular application while keeping development timelines manageable and avoiding unnecessary rework.

Future-proof design. The system was designed with scalability in mind, ensuring it could evolve with future needs.
